The Chicago Cubs who are having a great season and are right in the hunt are now on a 3 game losing streak. The good news for the Cubs is that the Brewers are also on a 3 game losing streak. Tonight the Cubs send their ace Carlos Zambrano to the mound to face the Astros. Zamrano who has turned around an early season slump is now 14-7 with a 3.42 era. Zambrano has been very dominant for most of the season but his last outing was shortend a bit due to cramps. The Astros will be sending Roy Oswalt to the hill. Oswalt is 11-6 with a 3.55 era. Tonights pitching match up is a good one and I beleive that this will be a good game. I am a bit surprised to see the Astros winning the first 2 games so far in this 3 game series. The Cubs are also missing a big key to their team and that is Alfonso Soriano who is now on the 15 day disabled list with the quad strain. The Cubs hope for him to return soon. The Astros are also missing their sensational rookie center fielder Hunter Pence who is also on the disabled list with the wrist injury. The pitching match up in tonights game will really set the tone for what should be a great game.

Are the Yankees really getting what they had hoped for with bringing Roger Clemens back to New York for one more season? I have had my doubts. But first let me say that I have always been a fan of Clemens and I do beleive he is one of the greatest pitchers in Major League history. Clemens currently has 351 wins and 4,647 strike outs in his hall of fame career. I just question if he can have a good strong winning season anymore like Clemens is known for. The pressure of even being a New York Yankee and pitching in New York is enough to really ride on someone and maybe even tough for a veteran like Clemens. Clemens last outting which was yesterday against the White Sox, he only lasted 1.2 innings in which he gave up 9 hits and 3 earned runs and no strike outs. The no strike outs is a big one for someone who is known for striking batters out and when you think of a pitcher lasting just 1.2 innings Roger Clemens would not even come to mind. Now I know everyone has their good days and their bad days. We will just have to wait and see if the Yankees exspensive 44 year old will work out the way the Yankees hope for. Currently this season Clemens is 3-5 with a 4.23 era. Last season in Houston Clemens finished the season 7-6 with a 2.30 era. Clemens is a hall of famer no question their but like ive said before I along with many others just question if he can still be succesful like he has always been known to be.

I almost couldnt believe this and it hurts that it is for real. Astros starting pitcher Jason Jennings just gave up 11 earned runs in the top of the first inning to the Padres. I cant even remember or think of another major league pitcher that has given up this many runs in just .2 innings pitched. Mark McLemore was brought in with 2 outs in the top of the first inning to bail out Jennings. I think this is gonna really hurt Jennings confidence next time he takes the mound and what I dont get is why Garner let him stay out their that long. Anyways the Astros will get a big test now on their bullpen and this is just coming a day after the Astros traded away reliever Dan Wheeler to the Devil Rays for 3rd baseman Ty Wiggington. This game is currently in the top of the 3rd with the Padres leading 12-0. Houston we have a problem.

The Padres are in Houston tonight to take on the Astros who are fresh off of winning 2 of the 3 games against the Dodgers, and taking game one against the Padres lastnight. The Astros who have been really struggling are now on a 3 game winning streak. The Astros are having to look to other bats and sparks on the team with the loss of rookie sensation Hunter Pence who is on the 15 day DL with a wrist injury. The Astros have called up Jason Lane from Triple A Round Rock to play center field for the injured Pence. The Astros are sending Houston native Woody Williams to the hill tonight. Williams is 5-11 with a 5.03 era this year. The Padres are sending one of the best pitchers in the league this season to the mound tonight. Jake Peavey is 9-5 with a 2.47 era so far this season. Peavey who was pitching very well up to the all star break has been struggling a bit in his recent starts. Peavey hasnt won a game in a while and he will be coming out hungry to shut down the Astros and get the Padres a win. It should be an intresting match up tonight to see if the Astros can keep the winning streak going, and to see if Jake Peavey will give the Padres one of his much expected dominate starts.

Craig Biggio announced today that he will retire at the end of this season. Biggio has said all along that he had a plan and when the time was right he would let everyone know. I respect that from a player and I think it is the right way to handle it. Biggio had goals this season and he has accomplished some very big things in his career. Most people dont realize that Biggio actually was a catcher before he became a second baseman. Becoming a second baseman was perhaps what has really made his career what it is today. Biggio’s great career may not have even lasted this long had he remained a catcher. I think a lot of us saw that Biggio’s retirement would be coming this year. Its gonna be hard to watch Biggio play in his final game at the end of the season. I remember watching Biggio as I have grown up and I have always respected him. As everyone always says “Biggio plays baseball the way it should be played” and that is the truth. Biggio said that he will probobly keep his uniform on all day the last game of his career because “once you take off the uniform off its off”. Biggio is a great baseball player who has accomplished a lot in his career and most recently got his 3000th hit. Craig also does so much off the field with working with “the sunshine kids”. The Sunshine Kids are dedicated to children with cancer, and Biggio works very closely with them and they mean so much to him. In all this is gonna be sad day for so many Astros fans and baseball fans in general. I wish Biggio the best in the rest of the season and we all know the hall of fame is where Biggio will end up.

The Houston Astros pull out a victory over the Pirates today but another Astros goes down. This time its rookie sensation Hunter Pence. Pence injured his wrist sliding into second base trying to break up a double play in the first inning. He would remain in the game till the 4th inning when he was in pain after his at bat. This is a big concern to Astros fans cause Pence has really brought a spark to the team even though the season isnt going very well. Pence has been huge at the plate for the Astros batting a hot .330.
He is expected back in the line up as early as monday but is currently listed day to day. Next up for the Astros is a home series against the Dodgers. It doesnt get any easier for the Astros.

The Round Rock Express recently called up young left hander Troy Patton from double a Corpus Christi recently and tonight i was able to watch im pitch in person. I was impressed with his performance and how he bounced back from a shakey first inning. He began the game with walking the lead off batter. He was hit hard a couple times in the inning with some fly balls that carried pretty deep towards the fence. The wild part of the first inning was when Oklahoma Redhawks Freddy Guzman stole home! I havent seen something like that in a long time and especially at this level of baseball. After the first inning Patton Settled into a groove and ending up giving up just 2 hits and 1 unearned run and striking out 6 in 7 innings of work tonight. The Astros need to continue to work with young pitchers like Patton cause they can deffinently use it. I wouldnt be surprised to see Patton make it to the major leagues pretty soon. The Express gave Patton some great offensive work and the Express rolled over the Oklahoma Redhawks (triple a affiliate of the Texas Rangers) 9-3.
